It’s incredible to reflect on how far we’ve come since those early days of luxury hotel video production. The journey from lugging around six or more flight cases full of equipment to now fitting much of that same capability into a single carry-on bag is a testament to the relentless march of technology. Back in 2010, creating a stunning aerial shot involved hiring a commercial helicopter at a cost that could make your eyes water—around $700 per hour, from takeoff to landing. And even then, we were working with a camera operator who, quite literally, had to hang out of the side of the chopper with the door removed to get the perfect shot. It was exhilarating, yes, but it was also risky, expensive, and logistically complex.

Compare that to today, where a drone—compact enough to fit in a backpack—can capture breathtaking 4-8K aerial footage with the ease of a few taps on a smartphone. These drones come with advanced stabilisation and gimbal systems that ensure every shot is smooth and cinematic, something that was almost impossible to achieve back in the day without setting up portable tracks, dollies, or lightweight cranes. And let’s not forget the lighting. The lighting kit we used to carry was the size of a golf umbrella, cumbersome and heavy. As we look to the future, it’s fascinating to speculate where the next decade of technology might take us. Perhaps we’ll see the rise of AI-powered drones that can autonomously navigate complex environments, capturing footage that even the most skilled human pilot would struggle to achieve. Virtual reality could become the norm in showcasing luxury properties, allowing potential guests to immerse themselves in a 360-degree experience from the comfort of their homes. The camera systems themselves could evolve to offer real-time, AI-enhanced editing, where footage is automatically colour-graded, stabilised, and ready for distribution the moment it’s captured.

Even the way we think about storytelling could change. With the advent of mixed reality and augmented reality, we might find ourselves creating experiences that blend the physical and digital worlds in ways we’ve never imagined. Imagine a potential guest using an AR headset to virtually walk through a hotel, interacting with its amenities, all while still sitting in their living room. The possibilities are endless.

In many ways, the advancements of the last decade have democratised high-end video production, making it more accessible and versatile. But for those of us who have been in the game long enough to remember the challenges of the early days, there’s a certain nostalgia for the time when getting that perfect shot was as much about creative problem-solving as it was about the equipment you had. As we continue to embrace new technologies, it’s exciting to think about the creative possibilities they will unlock, but it’s also a reminder of the importance of the human element in storytelling. After all, technology is just a tool; it’s the vision and passion of the filmmaker that truly brings a story to life.
