More Than a Pretty Picture: Why Real Representation Matters in Hotel Videos
At Factor Fifty Film, we’ve always believed that hotel videos should do more than just sell a room—they should tell a story. One that’s inviting, inclusive, and real. A few months ago, we shared our thoughts on using real body sizes in hotel video productions. The response was overwhelming, and it became clear: this is a conversation worth continuing. So let’s go a step further.
Diversity Is More Than a Box to Tick
We’re seeing positive change in the travel industry, but many hotel videos still default to a narrow ideal—models with perfect proportions, often white, often young, and often paired in straight, romantic couples. While aspirational marketing has its place, it shouldn’t come at the cost of authenticity or alienation.
Hospitality is, at its core, about welcoming everyone. So why don’t our visuals reflect that?
Real Bodies, Real Guests
When we cast for hotel videos, we encourage our clients to think beyond the “airbrushed” norm. Real body sizes tell real stories. Whether it’s a couple enjoying a weekend break, a group of friends lounging poolside, or a solo traveler savouring breakfast in bed, it matters that viewers see people who look like them. It makes the experience feel reachable—not reserved for someone else.
We’ve seen time and again that authentic representation leads to stronger emotional connection—and stronger bookings.
A Positive Cultural Mix
Diversity isn’t just visual—it’s cultural. Including a mix of backgrounds, ethnicities, and languages in your content doesn’t just look good; it signals something deeper: this place welcomes everyone.
We often work with a blend of professional models and local people to capture genuine moments. Whether it’s a family celebrating Diwali, a couple speaking Spanish over sunset drinks, or a group of Black friends laughing on a city break—these aren’t token gestures. They’re reflections of real-life travel. Here’s a Hotel Brand Video we created for Essque Zalu Zanzibar featuring main characters from around the world.
Gender and Identity: Don’t Be Afraid to Show It
There’s still hesitance in some corners of the industry when it comes to showing same-sex couples or gender-nonconforming guests. Maybe “afraid” is too strong a word—but we understand the concern: hoteliers worry about getting it wrong, causing offence, or losing business.
Our advice? Lead with honesty and care. Inclusivity done well won’t drive people away—it will draw the right people in.
When guests see themselves reflected—whether that’s two women holding hands in a luxury suite or a trans guest checking in with confidence—it makes a statement: you belong here.
Inclusion Is Good Business
This isn’t just about doing the right thing (although it is). Inclusive content performs better. It gets more shares, more likes, and more engagement—because people respond to being seen. In a crowded marketplace, real representation helps your hotel stand out for the right reasons.
How We Do It at Factor Fifty
When we plan a shoot, we think about more than camera angles and golden hour lighting. We think about who’s in the frame and what they represent. We work closely with casting agents, local communities, and our clients to find a mix of people that feels natural and welcoming.
Because the best hotel films don’t just show off the property—they show off the people you’ll meet there, and the people you might be when you arrive.
