How Drone Filming Transformed Hotel Video Production in the World– And Why Less is More

But there’s no doubt that drones have revolutionised the way we showcase luxury hotels and resorts – offering a stunning, elevated point of view that was once only possible with a helicopter and a Hollywood-sized budget.
Before DJI drones became the industry standard, we were already using early drone rigs to create dramatic, cinematic perspectives that captured the scale and setting of five-star properties in ways no tripod ever could. Back then, it meant working with custom-built gear and specialist pilots, but it gave us a creative edge — and helped shape what luxury hotel video content looks like today.
Seeing Luxury from a New Perspective
Drone footage allows potential guests to experience the ‘wow’ factor of a location before they arrive — the winding drive, the hidden cliffside setting, the lush private gardens, or the turquoise infinity pool overlooking the ocean. For luxury resorts, it’s the closest thing to flying someone in for a site tour.
This week’s film — embedded below — is our latest project, filmed in Scotland at one of the country’s most exclusive boutique hotels. The drone shots are few but powerful, setting the stage before we guide the viewer inside for a more intimate, sensory story.
Why We Don’t Overuse Drones
While aerial views are impressive, overusing drone footage can quickly become repetitive and impersonal. We’ve seen too many hotel videos that are 90% drone shots — impressive at first, but lacking human warmth, intimacy and narrative drive. A luxury experience should be aspirational but also relatable.
At Factor Fifty, we use drones with intent. A great hotel film should blend the majesty of the exterior with the magic of the guest experience — the soft light of a private dinner, the steam rising from a spa pool at sunrise, the smile of a staff member welcoming you in. Drones should enhance, not dominate.
